The experience of constantly being asked: ‘Where are you from?’ can be othering, invasive and tiresome right? If you’re not yt (white) and living in Australia you're probably pretty used to having to explain your existence to strangers all the time... I know I am...
The Where are you from? project (WAYF) is an online journal and photographic storyboard intended to become space for PoC to hear about the experiences of other PoC using a scenario that we are all familiar with. Perspective is powerful and sharing that is crucial to changing attitudes and understanding where each of our experiences differ (or where they relate).
The project specifically hopes to challenge the widespread understanding that to be Australian, is to appear caucasian and will give examples of how and by whom that attitude is perpetuated; therein exploring the ways in which brown and black Australians endeavour to affirm their sense of identity. As well becoming a space full of beautiful faces that look like our own :)
